15 miles east of Oxford, in the middle of the Holly Springs National Forest, on the road to William Faulkner’s birthplace of New Albany, Greenfield Farm is a 20.4-acre parcel owned by the University of Mississippi. Faulkner once owned this land. Farmers here, including members of the McJunkins family, raised mules and crops. Greenfield Farm Writers Residency pays tribute to the historical uses of the land and the literary legacy of Mississippi. 

About the Farm

William Faulkner owned this land, east of Oxford and west of his birthplace of New Albany. Farmers here raised mules and grew cotton and corn. At Greenfield Farm, Faulkner immersed himself in rural life. The University of Mississippi now owns this land.The Mississippi Lab at UM imagines new and bold uses for Greenfield Farm, paying tribute to the narrative of this place, the literary legacy of Mississippi, and Faulkner’s late career belief in what a writers residency promises.
